About Onslow Chamber of Commerce
Onslow is in a period of rapid growth, due primarily to the presence of Chevron's $29 billion Wheatstone, Woodside Energy's Macedon gas projects and Mineral Resources Onslow Iron project. This growth has included an increase in the residential population to in excess of 900 along with a significant FIFO population based at the Ashburton North Strategic Industrial Area (ANSIA). The impact on Onslow is - and will continue to be - significant. The current and future impacts apply both socially, environmentally and economically.
The Onslow Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) was incorporated in May 2004 under the Associations Incorporation Act 1987. As a locally based organisation with a significant presence in the community the OCCI membership believe they are ideally positioned to have a positive influence in each of these impact areas.
Demonstration of the belief in the OCCI as an effective, appropriate and capable influence is the significant growth in membership from 18 in May 2012 to over 130 (2023). To realise the belief of this growing membership and the expectations of the community however, the OCCI Board acknowledged the need for a consultative and strategic future approach to business that will position the OCCI to respond to the needs of members hence increasing their capacity to be competitive.
It is anticipated that these needs will include training and professional development, knowledge creation and awareness (in particular in relation to the procurement process) and access to resources required to be competitive - including utilities (power and water), transport and affordable housing and business premises. It was also noted that the overall planning process should identify external opportunities for funding that will support the OCCI in realising the full potential available to the community of Onslow.
From an economic, social and environmental perspective, the membership of the OCCI will be able to contribute to the sustainable and functional growth of the Onslow community. This contribution (it is envisaged) will come through creation of local employment, investment in the development of the town and through access to affordable goods, services, accommodation and utilities. In some circumstances, the role of the OCCI could be to represent the community with regard to future development - especially in relation to further increasing the uptake of local content and promoting buy local, diversification of the local economy (with a focus on the operational phase of industry), key infrastructure development and care and maintenance of the local environment.
